GLYNT.AI recently attended the #supplierspartnership (Suppliers Partnership for the Environment) conference in Troy, MI. SP is leading industry collaboration for the automotive supply chain. Our key question: With the change in the U.S. president and his policies, would sustainability still be in the plans for OEMs and Tier 1 and 2 suppliers? What we learned is that despite uncertainties, key industry leaders remain committed to building the business case for less energy, water, waste and emissions in the supply chain.
Three key themes emerged:
Streamlining Compliance and Incentive Capture for EVs and Batteries
The Inflation Reduction Act has been a catalyst for EV production, but there are strict requirements to qualify for incentives, including battery waste management and recycling. The collaboration is building a standardized process to comply and qualify for incentives.
EU Sets the Standards, US Companies Must Comply
EU regulations continue to shape environmental practices and reporting around the world. We’ll see six key EU regulations start in 2025:CSDDD, EFRAG, ESRS, CBAM, EU Batteries Regulation, and CSRD. While U.S. policies may have shifted, the global supply chain will be following the EU standards.
The Uncertainty from Potential Tariffs
The conference tone was pragmatic. There’s a lot of uncertainty, but the automotive sector has a proven ability to adapt to changing administrative policies while maintaining its environmental commitments. As always, building the business case for change is key, as there are many competing priorities for senior management. Sustainability projects get funded when they have a compelling business case.
Collaborations like Suppliers Partnership continue to play a key role by sharing best practices, education and training, and collaboratively building industry standards. We’re delighted to be part of this group!
