Underneath the hood, GLYNT processes a document in several steps. In one of the steps, we put the document through an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) engine. Early on at GLYNT, we recognized that our secret sauce was in organizing and transforming the data that comes out of OCR engines using our advanced machine learning. We decided not to build an OCR engine ourselves.
Years later, we’re seeing the fruits of that decision play out in a big way. This week we’re proud to launch a new user experience at GLYNT: Users can access multiple OCR engines through our user interface. We’ve seen OCR engines take a huge step forward in the past six months. Now that leading-edge output is easily accessible to GLYNT users.
To make sense of this, let’s go back in time. Wikipedia starts the OCR timeline in the 1870s! In more recent times, OCR engine development accelerated in 2006 when Google took an open source technology, Tesseract, under its wing. Since then, Tesseract has steadily improved. And it has accelerated the OCR engine development at AWS, MSFT and GOOG.
Today, these cloud providers have used their enormous competitive advantage – lots of documents, cheap computing at scale, and lots of skilled AI staff – to further accelerate OCR development. Now you can easily get OCR that does handwriting, foreign languages, various language character sets, document tables and more.
We’re excited to bring these powerful technologies to our users. You can switch between OCR engines, testing to see which best solves your document challenge. A much wider range of documents can now be “GLYNTified.”
