Energy Savings of up to 12% and Utility Bill Savings of up to $146 per year

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA — SEPTEMBER 2017
WattzOn has released a detailed study of Vivint Smart Home Thermostat performance. Based on nearly a year of hourly data from over 7,000 homes nationwide, WattzOn found energy savings as much as 12% across heating and cooling seasons, with utility bill savings up to $146 per year.

The study has two major findings:

  1. Energy savings increased when Vivint’s intelligent controls, the Sky Smart Home Assistant, were enabled. The sample included homes with thermostats under local control and homes in which the resident had opted-in to the Sky Smart Home Assistant. Homes that enabled the Sky Smart Home Assistant had 16% higher energy savings. This result is statistically significant at the 95% level.

2. Indoor temperatures stayed within very narrow bands. Often a thermostat is programmed to enforce a schedule of wide swings in indoor temperatures, changes that are designed to save energy. In contrast, the data on indoor temperatures from this study showed that the Vivint technology enabled a rather constant indoor temperature, with only small fluctuations – while achieving the energy savings noted above.

The temperature data from a summer week at one study home is illustrates this finding:

WattzOn used the ENERGY STAR(c) certification methodology and associated software to conduct this study. While this study is not an official certification report, the results are comparable in nature to those produced under the certification protocol.
